Sherpa evacuation (May 13 2008)
on the lhotse face
I didn't hear from base camp yesterday and that was apparently because there was a medical emergency involving a Sherpa.
It wasn't one of our Sherpas, but the son of one of the Icefall doctor's (the Sherpas who fix the icefall with ladders and ropes)who had appendicitis. He was up at Camp 2 and had to be carried down. Our camp was involved because Henry has known the Sherpa, Nima, for many years. Normally we would call a helicopter to base camp for his immediate evacuation to Kathmandu, but because of the strict regulations imposed on us this year, no helicopter's are allowed to land at base camp. So Nima had to be taken down to Pheriche, a walk of many hours. There is a small hospital here and a helicopter can also land. Henry went down there with him just to make sure the evacuation went smoothly, which it did as he was flown out this morning. Our climbing team are all fine. Everyone except Mike, Ray and Greg are now back down at base camp, after a successful if tiring trip to Camp 3. Mike and co had a good trip up to just over 7000 metres and are now back at Camp 2. Everyone is happy!
More tomorrow.
